Wellness design becomes genuinely complex when you work alongside doctors. Once medicine is involved, the brief extends beyond atmosphere and aesthetics to encompass clinical flow, treatment timing, privacy, safety and recovery, alongside how people feel physically and psychologically within the space.
This is where Wellness Intelligence™ comes into play: at the intersection of process, psychology and space.
That complexity becomes particularly apparent when healthcare is introduced into demanding environments such as retail. Retail spaces are designed around movement, stimulation and pace, while longevity medicine depends on regulation, calm, time and trust. Successfully bringing these contrasting environments together requires careful consideration of how people move, feel and behave within the space.
WELL Architecture Design confronted this challenge when designing Effect Doctors London, an IV therapy and longevity clinic within Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield in West London. Working closely with the medical team, the objective was not to hide the retail context, but to design through it—connecting where necessary and separating where essential.
Within a compact footprint, the design accommodates clinical workflows alongside privacy and genuine dwell-time comfort. Timber pods create enclosure and psychological safety, while restrained forms, biophilia, scent and soft reflection contribute to a calmer environment. Materials including stone, glass and reused and recycled elements were selected not simply for their appearance, but for their contribution to mood, comfort and wellbeing.
